This will be a good excuse to get out in the wood’s breath the fresh air and see some wilderness. You might want to bring a camera, compass, binoculars and what-ever else you want. Always good to be prepared when you are going into the woods. Really easy to get turned around. You might want to wear warm clothes because deer start dropping their sheds from around February to around April in the northwest Black tail deer are a little different. They start dropping their sheds in the first weeks of January Bucks that are older drop their horns earlier because their hormones drop as well. You need to kinda train your eye to spot the sheds. They look a lot like tree branches so it is good to bring a scope otherwise you would be running from branch to branch.hoping for a shed. That would be a waste of time and energy. If you find a shed, chances are the other one would be within a 400 yard radius. They drop them around the same time. Some times you will find 2 together, one on top of the other. Most sheds are found around where they sleep and eat
The price for antlers
Buyers are Paying 2.oo to 16 dollars a pound and for matched sets of deer and elk, depending on the measurements $150.00- $ 1,500. Not to shabby if you’ve collected a bunch of them Deer antlers weigh 3 to 9 pounds.elk weigh around 40 pounds for the large ones. Wow! wouldent want to pack a few of those out on my own.Super women… ya right not without a horse!! DEER NTLER BACK SCRATCHER
This will give you even another excuse to get out into the beautiful, great out doors ! You will need to find a unique looking stick. A peice of a deer antler needs to fit on the end. Again I found my piece of wood down by the water. It had personality and was the right weight and height
This picture did not turn out to well but if you look close at the end of it,there is a rock in bedded in it. It looks kinda cool and has a lot of character to it.I chose this one for my antler back scratcher. after you have chosen your perfect peice of wood, take the bark off if you choose and clean dirt and deb re. Next will be the sanding.with a med grit sand paper then after that fine grit. You want it to be super smooth. Yes it is a back scratcher but you don’t want to leave sharp peices sticking out here and there….. unless you prefer it that way. It’s your choice. take your deer antler and towards the end of the antler you will see about 2 or 3 forks sticking out. You want to cut below that with a hack saw (clamp it down) saw about 4 inches or so, enough to tie it off.
Now the drilling
Before drilling the holes, put the antler and wood together to see if it fits flat on there for when you go to fasten it down. If not, you will need to file (medium file)both surfaces flat so they will fit nicely. Now clamp them down
take your dremel and a medium size drill bit and drill a hole thru both wood and antler towards the top where you want to start tying it off and another hole thru both towards the bottom where you will end tying it off
string a strip of leather thru the top hole both wood and antler then tie a knot in the leather.start wrapping it tightly around dab the wood with super glue as you go along when you have made it to the other drill hole.run the leather strap thru to the other side. Pull it as tight as you can, then, tie another knot on that end to hold them tightly together.
The only thing left to do is put clear coat on it and maybe drill a hole on the other end so you can hang it up. You can decorate these how ever you want I have embedded marbles in them before to give it a little extra something. these make great novelty gifts. They are unique there is no two alike in the whole world. It is special because of that and because you made it with your own to hands. If anybody ever asks you what it is say”It’s a back scratcher silly, you have never seen one before?!” sheez.
OK I have given you a little lesson on shed hunting and showed you how to make a novelty back scratcher . so what are you waiting for? power tools” rel=”noopener” target=”_blank”>
