Might as well add some music to the mix!! This is a good project to do with children. But first,a little facts about the flute before starting, did you know,a hole will give a higher note when placed closer to the blow hole and a lower one when placed farther away.A hole will give a higher note when the hole is bigger and a lower one when the hole is smaller. It is a good thing to know.
A group of scientists unearthed a 35,000 -year-old -flute in Germany. They believe it is the oldest hand crafted musical instrument ever discovered. It has been in use since the stone age.The flute is made of vulture bone
A picolo is basically a mini flute. Through out the years”>flutes have been made of bone, ivory, wood, jade, glass, brass, nickel, silver, gold and platinem Did you know that every flute made has its own unique sound?interesting fact! Anyways, you will need a dremel tool with different sized drill bits, hacksaw, tape measure, pencil, sand paper, file and alot of patients.
kchoosing your bamboo Choose a piece of bamboo with no cracks or holes also one that is already dried .The 1/8 inch thick in diameter makes the best sound. My piece of bamboo is 14″inches long
For a 14-inch flute the nodes should be about 7 inches apart in between each other. After you cut your bamboo, punch the nodes out.(joints that separates the sections in the bamboo)Then take some sand paper, tape it to a stick or something and smooth it out on the inside where the nodes were
Next you will need a stick or a dowel that will fit snug inside the bamboo up to where the cut is that you made. When you find one that fits snug, you will need to flatten the side of it but with a curve on the end going upwards
The curve will push the air upwards when you blow into it to make the sound. When you are done shaping it, shove the end with the curve going in first, all the way up to the hole you cut.Make sure the side you filed faces upwards.
now blow some air into the end of bamboo where the gap between the bamboo and the wood is you filed and inserted .It should make noise,if not ,keep ajusting the peice of wood and blowing until you get noise .Some times it takes a little ajusting and filing to get noise but dont give up,i know you can do it(a little pep talk)
Once you have noise, mark the EXACT position of the of the wood then glue it in the EXACT position it was.I used super glue so you have to be fast and glue it just right.Dont glue your fingers or your lips trying to blow when it is still wet…….ok.
After it is DRY , cut the access wood off. I left a little on to be super sure it will sound the same plus you will have a little lip rest there .It is up to you wether you want it like that or not. Now,there are a few things you can do with this. You can make a swanee flute or a regular basic flute with the finger holes.
A swanee slide flute you will need a stick or dowel that will fit snug inside the bamboo but you still want it to slide easily in and out. Attach a piece of styrafoam or fluffy material at the end of the dowel.slide it in and out that is what makes the noise.
Remember what i said in the beginning ? Large hole=higher note, small hole=lower note . finger hole longer distance away from mouth piece=lower note, closer distance=higher note. ok so you have all these choices, awesomeness! click
You can use your dremel tool to drill the note holes and make a neat design on your flute. I havent put a design on mine yet but when i do i will post a picture. these flutes can also be money makers or a great gift! any questions, comments? I would love to hear from you! Have fun with your flute
