In Europe the 17th and 18 centuries, the walking stick became popular among the gentleman. It was also used as a weapon replacing the sword. In the 16th century they used bamboo and other tropical grasses(yes bamboo is a grass). That is where the word cane came from.
This is a great excuse to get out into the wilderness, the woods and water. I usually have good luck down by the water. I find all kinds of cool pieces of wood and really neat rocks and things. Don’t get side tracked like I always do. We are looking for a walking stick. I like to look for ones that have a little character to them, whether it is a weird looking bulge or strange knot a bend in the wood. Something that makes it unique, When you run into it you will know. It is better to find one that is already dry with no cracks. If you do use a wet one, you will have to dry it slows to try to prevent it from cracking. That takes a long, long. Time. When you finally find that right walking stick, while you are still in the wilderness, you should prepare some of it there What I mean is take any access limbs off and strip the bark right there. It will save from having a mess at home When you have done all that, take it home and sand it. Start out with a rough grit of sand paper and work your way to a smooth grit until the surface is smooth to the touch. Now for the design I decided to put dragon flies on mine because I think they are really cool. They are the only bug I like. Oh accepts the praying manthus, I like those too.OH yes and butterflies those too.MY friend calls them flutter byes. Here I am getting side tracked again.Focus Laurie! You are gonna wanna draw the design onto the stick to give you some guidance on where to use your dremel tool.
Here is a picture of a dragon flie you can refer to when you are drawing it on the walking stick There is so many colors of them. It is amazing. I put several colors on mine. Thought it would make it more interesting, more to look at and all the different colors. After you have drawn them on, use a round medium carbide bit on your dremel tool and carefully trace the dragon fly. Make it so it stands out by removing the wood material around it and sorta smooth the background out
This is what I mean about blending it in and tapering it off. I added some paint so you can kinda get the idea It makes it look better instead of the abrupt edge. I NEVER paint before sanding. This is just an example. Do that with all of them you put on there then you can paint them. OK,I showed you how to do a walking stick and when you are done I would love to see it. Drop me a line with a picture.I will post mine shortly I am putting final touches on it.thank you for visiting
