On July 24, 2018 by laurie taylorThis is a good project to do with children but first you need a bird house gourd. There are different names for this gourd
bottleneck, calabash, long Mellon is a few of its name
It needs to be completely dry before making the bird house, if freshly cut(cut before 1st frost) leave about 3 to 4 inches of stem. Clean with 8 parts water to 1 part bleach. Set in well ventilated area to dry, it will take about 3 months to Before using, wipe down with bleach solution a second time to make sure all the mold is gone.
Now we can begin to make the little house. The entrance holes should face straight out. Different birds have different requirements for example the little chickadee needs a 1 and a quarter entrance hole and they like wooded areas.
To make the entrance hole, use your rotary tool with a bigger drill bit and drill where the entrance will be.after drilling, you can use a file(round)to file it to the desired size.
Drill 6 to 8 drainage holes on the bottom with a small drill bit and 2 holes on top to hang and for fresh air to enter
remove the seeds from the gourd to dry out and plant for next year. There is plenty of things you can make with these gourds
you might as well grow them! they are fun! Bird house gourds attract purple martin, woodpeckers, screech owls and many more bird species and the bigger the entrance the bigger the bird!!
To decorate, i use non toxic acrylic paint. It will crack over time but it is safe for the birds and you can always remodel and give it a face lift and slap another coat on!
you will find on the internet there are different patterns you can use or make up your own. I decided to make a birdy motel
Still have some perfecting to do but when it is done, it will be a 5 star motel!!
I showed you this now I would love to see yours! drop me a line if you have any questions or comments you can right below
