I use a wood rasp almost as much as I do the dremel tool.they seem to go hand in hand when I am doing certain projects. The rasp helps smooth and shape wood and also can get into those hard to reach places. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some can be rough, medium or smooth. It all depends on what you use it for.
When I first started carving wood, I never even thought of using a wood rasp to help with a carving then one day it dawned on me. I tried it and have been using them ever since. They make things so much easier,.cant live without them. If you are a beginner, I highly recommend purchasing some wood files/rasps to go along with your other wood carving get ups, you will be happy you did! If your not well than ,,I don’t know, I will eat a spoonful of saw dust. That’s how much I think you are gonna like them!
I was really surprised to hear the history on wood rasps and files. I thought it would be boring but really, it”s not, It is pretty interesting. You might think so too…… I hope! If not, no I won’t eat anymore saw dust. I will just tell you about it anyways!
In Egypt around 1200-1000 b.c. the lisht dynasty, they had wood rasps and they were made out of bronze. The Assyrians had them in the 7th century and they were made of iron.
Metal files were discovered in Britain that dated 666 b.c. and the oldest file discovered is over 3,400 yrs old from the Mediterranean. So they have been around for a long, long, long time In 1750 a man called Chopite made a file making machine that saved a lot of time instead of making them by hand. some of my files and rasps Notice the curved rasps for detail those are Swiss pattern rasps, there is a file on each end and smooth in the middle. There is all different shapes. To care for your files/rasps you should store them separate not touching each other like they are in the second picture. It could dull the teeth or even break them off,big nono!! When filing the correct way is to push the file forward for cutting then lift to go back Cleaning your file/rasps,you can purchase a file card from an industrial suplier.Use oven clear on them the the file card .If you take care of your rasps/files they will last for years to come click
Now that I have told you a little about files and rasps I hope you learned something new and if you have questions and comments, please don’t hesitate!
